Woodworker and Musician Dr. Darrell Smith to Present Demonstration at Mon Valley Academy for the Arts

Woodworker and musician Dr. Darrell Smith of Brownsville will present a demonstration at Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) in Brownsville, PA, on May 31 from 7 to 9 p.m. on constructing musical instruments, including violas, violins, ukeleles, solid body guitars, jazz guitars, and mandolins, from scratch. He will also discuss the history and development of these instruments.

The demonstration admission fee is $10 and can be paid at the door. Registration is suggested but not required. To register, email info@monvalleyacademyforthearts.org.

Dr. Smith is a graduate of California University of Pennsylvania and Texas A&M University. He has been a professional woodworker and musician for over 50 years. 

Dr. Smith is a passionate advocate for the arts and education. He believes that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the joy of making music. He is excited to share his knowledge and skills with the community at MVAA.

The demonstration will occur at the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center (MVAA South), 119 Brownsville Ave, Brownsville. There will be a question-and-answer session following the demonstration. Light refreshments will be served. Participants are welcome to BYOB of their beverage of choice.

  • He was born in Kittanning, Pennsylvania in 1940.
  • He began playing the violin at the age of 10.
  • He earned his bachelor’s degree in industrial arts from California University of Pennsylvania in 1961.
  • He earned his master’s degree in industrial arts from California University of Pennsylvania in 1965.
  • He earned his Ph.D. in industrial technology from Texas A&M University in 1968.
  • He taught at California University of Pennsylvania from 1968 to 2004.
  • He is a member of the American Federation of Musicians and the National Association of Woodworkers.
  • He is a recipient of the Pennsylvania Governor’s Arts Award.
  • He is a published author on the subject of woodworking.
  • He is a frequent speaker at woodworking and music festivals.
