Carla E. Anderton is a nonprofit executive, educator, writer, and regional arts leader whose career reflects sustained leadership, professional excellence, and a deep commitment to strengthening communities through the arts. As Vice President of Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) and founding partner of the Strategic Workforce & Arts Network of Pennsylvania (SWAN), she advances cross-sector initiatives that expand equitable access to arts education while building collaborative systems that connect arts, workforce development, education, and civic organizations across Southwestern Pennsylvania.

At MVAA, Anderton provides executive leadership for a multi-county nonprofit serving learners of all ages through accessible arts programming. She leads communications strategy, institutional storytelling, and grant development that support scholarship growth and long-term sustainability, contributing to MVAA’s recognition with the Washington County Community Foundation’s President’s Crystal Award for regional impact and collaboration.

Her leadership is defined by mentorship and opportunity-building, particularly through initiatives such as the Empower a Rising Star (EARS) scholarship program and regional partnerships that cultivate emerging artists and future nonprofit leaders.

Anderton’s professional path bridges nonprofit leadership, higher education, and publishing. As an adjunct professor at Westmoreland County Community College, Seton Hill University, and the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, she mentored students across academic and workforce pathways while emphasizing critical thinking and applied communication.

Earlier, as President of the Jozart Center for the Arts, she led its transition to a nonprofit model and oversaw more than 500 arts and community events, strengthening regional engagement and laying the groundwork for sustained cultural participation.

Her communications leadership includes service as Editor-in-Chief of Pennsylvania Bridges and California Focus, where she elevated statewide conversations around workforce, education, and community development.

She has also advanced inclusive cultural dialogue through collaborative programming and was recognized by the Romani Media Initiative for her impact on representation and community engagement.

Anderton holds an MFA in Writing from Seton Hill University and a BA in English from PennWest University (California).

She currently serves on the boards of the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh, Mon Valley Performing Arts Academy, and the California Area Preservation Society.
